Federal assess imposes new redistricting strategize on Galveston County – Houston Public Media

Galveston County has a new political map imposed by a federal judge to comply with Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which prohibits racial gerrymandering. Judge Jeffrey Brown ordered the leaders of Galveston County to implement Map 1, a “least changes” political map which was previously rejected by the county commission’s Republican majority in 2021. The new map preserves the majority coalition of Black and Latino voters in Commissioner Precinct 3, which was disrupted by the 2021 redistricting strategy. The change came just hours after the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals lifted a stay on Brown’s order for the county to redraw its map. The court will rehear the case in May.
