FBI Director Wray calls for renewal of key surveillance tool
FBI Director Christopher Wray has urged Congress to renew Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which provides most of the daily intelligence for the president and is set to expire on December 31. Wray argued the surveillance law is crucial for U.S. national security, particularly regarding threats from Iran and China, and emphasized its role in detecting terrorist organizations. Despite opposition from some Republicans who believe the FBI and Justice Department have been unjustly used against conservatives, Wray insisted the law is critical for the FBI to protect American citizens. He also noted a 98% compliance rate with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, and stressed that failure to renew the law would be akin to rebuilding a pre-9/11 “wall” hindering access to crucial national security information.
