Father, 6-year-old daughter discover century-old shipwreck on fishing trip at Lake Michigan
Tim Wollak and his six-year-old daughter, Henley, discovered a never-before-seen shipwreck in Lake Michigan which is believed to be the wreck of a ship that sunk in 1871. The vessel, possibly the barkentine George L. Newman, was built in Ohio in 1855, and wrecked on October 8, 1871, amid heavy smoke from the Great Peshtigo Fire, the deadliest forest fire in US history. The Wisconsin Historical Society will survey the wreck in the spring and assess it for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This discovery comes a few months after another long-lost shipwreck, the schooner Trinidad, was found in Lake Michigan.
