F1’s ground effect cars can be ‘confusing’

The 2022 technical regulations for Formula 1 have shifted the aerodynamic focus to the underside of the car, which now produces 60% of total downforce. Various teams, including Red Bull, Aston Martin, McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes, have experienced fluctuating performance due to these changes. Two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso comments that the new regulations have made the cars more challenging to set up and understand, particularly when considering the interaction between aerodynamics, suspension, mechanical grip, and tire interaction. Alonso also suggests that the temperamental behavior could be attributed to the aerodynamic platform and the need to run the suspension low and stiff to maximize ground effects.
