Extreme Cold Weather in Texas Will Test State’s Power Grid
The Texas power grid, which suffered a catastrophic failure during the 2021 freeze, managed to withstand severe cold conditions in 2024. A request for Texans to conserve electricity was issued by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) but later withdrawn, indicating sufficient power to meet demand. Government officials have since taken steps to prevent such failure in the future, including increasing the solar and wind energy on the grid. However, the possibility of rolling blackouts was not ruled out by ERCOT, as a measure to prevent overwhelming the grid during peak demand. Despite improvements, the grid remains vulnerable, particularly during morning hours when demand is high and renewable energy production is low.
