Ex-US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy will leave Congress, raising Republican worries

Kevin McCarthy, the ousted U.S. House Speaker, announced his intent to leave Congress by the end of the year. This decision has caused concern among Republicans over the implications for their narrow majority. McCarthy’s departure will put added pressure on proceedings such as the fiscal 2024 spending bills that must be approved by January 19 to avoid a partial government shutdown. McCarthy’s seat will be replaced via a special election within 126 to 140 days of the governor’s call. McCarthy’s departure alongside other Republican departures could reduce the party to only a one-seat margin for passing legislation in early 2024.
