Former Democratic state legislator Annazette Collins is due to stand trial on federal tax evasion charges. The charges, filed in 2021, allege that Collins, who worked as a lobbyist for Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) following her political career, underreported income and failed to file federal income tax returns for her lobbying and consulting firm. Collins’ indictment followed an expansive investigation into a bribery scheme involving ComEd and former House Speaker Michael Madigan, along with other lawmakers and lobbyists. Collins faces charges for filing a false individual income tax return, failing to file a corporate income tax return, and willfully failing to file an individual income tax return, with the most serious charges carrying up to three years in prison. Her trial is expected to last about a week.
