Ex-Alaska Airlines pilot who tried to cut plane’s engines is released from jail
Ex-Alaska Airlines pilot, Joseph Emerson, was released from jail and is set to face trial for allegedly attempting to cut the engines of a passenger flight while off-duty in the cockpit. Emerson, who has pleaded not guilty to reduced charges of reckless endangerment, was previously facing attempted murder charges. His release conditions include mental health services, abstinence from drugs and alcohol, and a prohibition from coming within 30 feet of an operable aircraft. The incident drew attention to cockpit safety procedures and the mental fitness of pilots. Emerson disclosed to police following his arrest that he was struggling with depression and had taken psychedelic mushrooms 48 hours prior to the incident.
