EPPD retracts information in fatal hit-and-run press release, defense alleges ‘mistrust’

The El Paso Police Department (EPPD) has issued a correction after releasing false information about an 18-year-old named Ruger Garrett Clark, who is facing charges over a hit-and-run incident that led to the death of 17-year-old Anahi Leanos. The initial statement from the EPPD wrongly accused Clark of stealing items from Leanos’ vehicle after the crash. Clark’s lawyer, Justin Underwood, criticized the EPPD for the incorrect information, which he said undermines trust and wrongly prejudiced the community against Clark. The EPPD has since apologized and clarified that Clark took items from his own vehicle, not Leanos’.
