Earth surpasses 1.5 Celsius warming limit for 12 months for first time

Earth’s temperature has been 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than preindustrial times for the past twelve months, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. This increase is due to a combination of a warm El Niño cycle and human-caused warming. In the 2016 Paris climate agreement, nations agreed to keep the global temperature from exceeding 2 degrees Celsius and to pursue efforts to keep it below 1.5 degrees Celsius. However, most scientists agree that passing 1.5C is inevitable, due to slow transition from fossil fuels and increasing carbon emissions. Despite the increase, scientists argue that the real challenge is getting carbon emissions to zero to halt future warming.
