Dropped off in suburb, migrants finally reach Chicago by Metra train

Migrants, primarily from Venezuela, are being transferred by bus from El Paso, Texas to Chicago’s suburbs by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The migrants who were dropped off in Glen Ellyn missed their train to Chicago due to ill-coordination and were left stranded in freezing temperatures. This practice, criticisized as treating people like cargo, has seen over 630 buses carrying 29,000 migrants to Chicago in the past 16 months. A complex humanitarian crisis in Venezuela has led to a record influx of migrants at the U.S. border, with encounters between Venezuelan nationals and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency officials increasing from 50,499 in 2021 to 334,914 in 2023.
