Did embarrassment of losing a home to foreclosure lead to murder?

Heidi Firkus was killed in 2010 in Saint Paul, Minnesota by a shotgun blast her husband, Nick Firkus, claimed happened during a struggle with a home intruder. Investigator Nichole Sipes re-examined the case in 2019 and found discrepancies in Nick Firkus’ story. Witnesses heard a muffled argument and gunshots from the Firkus house, but no one saw an intruder. It was also revealed that the couple were facing financial trouble and about to lose their home. In 2021, Nick Firkus was charged with Heidi’s murder. Prosecutors contended that there was no intruder and that Nick shot himself in the leg after killing Heidi. He was found guilty on two counts of murder in 2023 and was sentenced to life without parole. Nick Firkus is appealing his conviction.
