Democrat John Whitmire wins Houston mayoral runoff over Sheila Jackson Lee

Democratic state Senator John Whitmire has won Houston’s mayoral race, defeating Democratic U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee. Whitmire led by a significant margin of 65.27% to 34.73%. This election marked Houston’s last major election of 2023, with a low turnout. Both candidates are Democrats, and Jackson Lee had secured major endorsements, including from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, while Whitmire touted his Democratic party credentials and courted Republican support. Whitmire held a significant lead among Republicans and Latino voters, and despite Houston leaning Democratic, the city doesn’t hold as strong a Democratic stronghold as other large U.S. cities.
