‘Cyber-kidnapping’: Missing exchange student found cold and scared by Utah police

A 17-year-old Chinese exchange student, Kai Zhuang, was found alone and frightened in a tent by Utah police following his cyber-kidnapping. Reported missing by his high school after his parents sent $80,000 to bank accounts in China in response to a ransom photo of their son, Zhuang was found in a makeshift campsite near Brigham City. The police discovered him using his bank and phone records. Upon being found, Zhuang requested to speak with his family, who were unaware of him being missing. The FBI has noted that similar cyber-kidnapping scams have targeted other foreign exchange students, particularly those from China.
