The Bayou City’s restaurant industry has notably grown over the years due to a new generation of talented chefs, many of whom trained at The Art Institute of Houston which closed in September 2023. Among these chefs is Ryan Lachaine, co-owner and executive chef of Riel, a restaurant serving ‘globally inspired Gulf Coast cuisine.’ Lachaine emphasizes the importance of culinary school training, as well as practical experience in professional kitchens, particularly for the current generation of aspiring chefs who have been inspired by popular cooking shows on television.
