“Critical failure” closes I-195 west on Washington Bridge in Providence, Rhode Island

The westbound lanes of the I-195 on the Washington Bridge in Providence, Rhode Island, are closed due to “critical failure” of some bridge components. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) plans to move westbound traffic to two lanes on the eastbound side of the bridge in two to three weeks so repairs can begin. The repair process could take three months or more. Detour routes have been suggested for local traffic in East Providence and for traffic from Southeast Massachusetts. Drivers are advised to anticipate delays.
