CPD takes legal step to fire cop
Attorneys for Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling have taken legal action to ask a Cook County judge to reverse a recent Chicago Police Board ruling that cleared Officer James Hunt of wrongdoing. This is the first such request made in the consent-decree era and it stems from charges against Hunt related to a chaotic arrest scene in May 2020. Hunt was accused of violating nine different Chicago Police Department rules during an arrest, but the Police Board nearly unanimously acquitted him in October. The complaint argues that the board’s decision to clear Hunt of wrongdoing was “against the manifest weight of the evidence, arbitrary, unreasonable, capricious, unrelated to the requirements of service, and contrary to law and sound public opinion.” Court records show the last such appeal was made by CPD superintendent Garry McCarthy in 2015.
