Congressional leaders ready stopgap bill to extend government funding to March
The new leader of the House of Representatives is facing criticism from hard-right members over his agreement on a budget deal that was reached on January 7th. The budget deal outlines $1.66 trillion in spending for the next fiscal year, with $886 billion set aside for defense. Many from the right who were involved in the previous ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, are threatening a similar motion against Johnson. In addition, they are pushing for new immigration policies to curtail the flow of migrants at the U.S-Mexico border. Lastly, Johnson has been urged by centrists to stick to his initial agreement, assuring him they support his decision.
