College presidents seek to clarify position on calls for Jewish genocide after blowback
The presidents of the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), Harvard University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have been criticized for their responses regarding antisemitism on their campuses. Lawmakers questioned if calls for the genocide of Jews violated the schools’ harassment policies, and the presidents replied that it would be a context-based decision. Following the hearing, Harvard President Claudine Gay and UPenn President Liz Magill posted online remarks asserting that calls for violence or genocide against any group had no place at their universities. MIT President Sally Kornbluth has not released a follow-up statement. Both Gay and Magill acknowledged the need for a balance between free speech and student safety.
