CNN Poll: Trump Dominates NH GOP Primary, Haley in Second

  • According to a new CNN Poll, Donald Trump maintains a significant lead among likely voters in New Hampshire’s Republican presidential primary, with 42% saying they would vote for him. Nikki Haley has moved into second place with 20% support, followed by Chris Christie at 14% and Ron DeSantis at 9%. Haley’s support has climbed 8 percentage points from the last CNN/UNH poll in September, with other candidates’ support remaining relatively steady.
  • The survey found that Trump’s standing in New Hampshire is boosted by majority support among registered Republicans (55%), while undeclared voters are split between Haley, Trump, and Christie. A sharp increase since September in the share of likely Republican voters in New Hampshire saying their vote is locked in has also been noted, from 36% in September to 52% currently. More than 8 in 10 Trump supporters say their choice is definite compared to 29% who back other candidates.
  • Republican primary voters in New Hampshire give Trump broadly positive ratings for his policy positions (67%), decision-making abilities (66%), physical and mental fitness (63%), and ability to understand the problems facing people like them (60%). For the most important issue in deciding their primary vote, 40% of likely Republican primary voters name the economy or jobs, 18% mention immigration or the border, and 15% mention a foreign policy issue.

The poll reveals that Trump garners 42% support, short of his national majority, followed by Haley at 20%, Chris Christie at 14%, Ron DeSantis at 9%, and Vivek Ramaswamy at 8%. Haley’s support shows a significant climb from the last CNN/UNH poll in September, while Trump, Christie, and DeSantis maintain steady support.

Trump’s Standing among Registered Republicans and Undeclared Voters

The poll indicates that Trump’s majority support comes from registered Republicans, while undeclared voters show a split preference between Haley, Trump, and Christie. Undeclared voters comprise about 43% of likely GOP primary voters, similar to the 2012 GOP primary.

New Hampshire Secretary of State David Scanlan confirmed that the state’s first-in-the-nation primary would take place on January 23, about a week after Iowa’s caucuses initiate the GOP nomination contest.

Trust in Trump and GOP Candidates to Handle Key Issues

Half of likely GOP primary voters trust Trump the most on handling the war between Israel and Hamas and the economy, with Haley being the next trusted candidate. Trump also leads on handling abortion, but Haley follows closely behind.

How GOP Primary Voters Viewed Latest Republican Presidential Debate

The majority of likely GOP primary voters who followed the latest Republican presidential debate believe Haley and Ramaswamy performed the best. Among all likely GOP primary voters, almost half indicated their preference for Trump to participate in future GOP primary debates.

About the Poll

The CNN New Hampshire poll was conducted online November 10-14 by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. The poll results among 1,946 New Hampshire adults have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points while results among 841 likely Republican primary voters have an error margin of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
