City agrees $1.9m settlement with Black family held at gunpoint by police | US policing
The US police force in the Denver suburb of Aurora has agreed to a settlement of $1.9m with Brittney Gilliam and her four daughters, after a lawsuit claiming the police’s actions were evidence of systemic racism. The incident occurred in 2020, when Gilliam and the girls were mistakenly believed to be driving a stolen car and were forcefully apprehended. The settlement is designed to minimize the trauma of a trial and will be divided evenly among the claimants. Aurora has previously had to pay substantial sums over police misconduct, including a $15m settlement in 2021 relating to the death of Elijah McClain.
