Chicago police open arson investigation after fire at historic Swift Mansion
The historic Swift Mansion in Chicago’s South Side neighborhood of Grand Boulevard suffered a fire that has left 10 occupants displaced and sparked an arson investigation. The Chicago Fire Department, with at least 55 personnel, were able to put out the initial fire that started in the attic, but it reignited and burned for over 90 minutes before being extinguished. The fire is said to have started in a rear stairwell due to “human action.” The mansion, built in 1892, was converted into the Inner City Youth and Adult Foundation in the 1990s. The property’s owners are also currently involved in a lawsuit over alleged illegal tenant evictions.
