Chicago mayor reacts after state halts Brighton Park migrant site – NBC Chicago
The state of Illinois has temporarily halted plans to build a migrant base camp in Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood due to environmental concerns. The decision came after a review of an 800-page environmental assessment revealed levels of mercury and other contaminants in the soil exceeding environmental limits. Despite the setback, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson stated his mission to provide adequate shelter for migrants is still very much alive. Instead of the base camp, the state will expedite efforts to launch a shelter in the Little Village neighborhood and is also exploring alternate sites for shelter. The environmental report indicated the presence of mercury, lead, arsenic, and other toxic substances in the soil at the Brighton Park site.
