Chicago man convicted of shooting infant’s father in Gary

A Chicago man, Ray Dampier, was convicted of murder for fatally shooting a baby’s father in Gary, Indiana, after being refused to hold the baby. The incident occurred on May 10, 2022, resulting in the death of 29-year-old Devonte Brown. Dampier, who represented himself and pleaded not guilty during a three-day trial, had dated the sister of Brown’s girlfriend. According to the victim’s statement before his death, Dampier shot him following a disagreement over holding Brown’s 6-week-old baby. Dampier is also appealing two separate contempt of court citations related to the case.
