CDC Recall Warning: Tianeptine products or ‘gas station heroin’ linked to cluster of severe illness
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has linked a cluster of severe illnesses to products containing the unapproved drug tianeptine, also known as “gas station heroin,” which could also include synthetic cannabis. Neptune Resources, a producer of tianeptine products, has initiated a nationwide recall. While tianeptine is an antidepressant prescribed in Europe, Asia, and Latin America to treat major depressive disorder, it is not approved in the US by the FDA. The FDA has issued warnings against using tianeptine products due to serious risks, including seizures, loss of consciousness, and death, and has received reports of at least two deaths related to these products. The CDC flagged Neptune’s Fix as the most frequently reported tianeptine product, and noted several cases of adverse effects from tianeptine use.
