California bill bans plastic grocery bags – NBC Bay Area

California plans to ban all plastic shopping bags by 2026, according to a new bill introduced in the state legislature. This comes despite the state’s existing ban on thin plastic shopping bags, which hasn’t reduced overall plastic use due to consumers purchasing thicker plastic bags. Senator Catherine Blakespear cites a government study that found a rise in plastic bags thrown in the trash, from 8 to 11 pounds per person annually between 2004 and 2021. Twelve states, including California, currently have some form of plastic bag ban, with hundreds of cities also implementing their own. If passed, the new bill will only impact half of California’s population, as most major cities already have similar bans.
