Bowman Is Latest House Democrat to Face a Primary Over Israel Stance

Westchester County Executive George Latimer is challenging Representative Jamaal Bowman in a Democratic primary, setting up a potentially contentious contest that will test the Democratic divide over the Middle East war. The race pits a progressive critic of Israel, Bowman, against a deeply-rooted Democratic establishment figure, Latimer. Latimer challenges Bowman’s calls for a ceasefire as premature, while Bowman maintains a firm stance against Israel’s actions in the Gaza conflict. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) is expected to contribute millions to Latimer’s campaign, as it seeks to oust members of the House “Squad” advocating for a ceasefire. The contest will take place in a district that is home to a significant Jewish community and is nearly half Black or Latino.
