The city of Aurora, Colorado, has reached a $1.9 million settlement with Brittney Gilliam, a Black woman who was mistakenly removed from her car at gunpoint by police officers. Gilliam filed a civil rights lawsuit in 2021, alleging that she and her family members were targeted and searched without probable cause due to their race. The incident occurred in August 2020 during a family outing. Police had incorrectly believed Gilliam’s vehicle was stolen due to a license plate mix-up with a stolen motorcycle. The traumatic event resulted in the four minors present seeking weekly therapy, and the settlement prevents a trial from occurring, sparing the children from reliving the event.
