Bill to ban satanic displays advances, after heated debate on religion

A Senate committee in Phoenix has given preliminary approval to a bill proposed by Republican Sen. Jake Hoffman that would prohibit satanic displays on public grounds. Named the RESPECT Act, it aims to ban “satanic memorials, statues, altars, or displays” on public property, arguing they desecrate the land. Critics, including Satanists and members of the Freedom from Religion Association, argue that the bill is a violation of freedom of religion rights and could lead to the restriction of non-Christian expressions of faith. The bill passed in a 5-1 vote, with the only opposition coming from Sen. Juan Mendez who called it a “straight up attack on religion.”
