Biden Administration Toughens Limits on Deadly Air Pollution

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has tightened regulations on fine industrial particles, a common type of air pollution, for the first time in a decade. The new rule specifies a limit of nine micrograms per cubic meter of air, down from 12 micrograms. Businesses have contested the change, arguing that it will increase costs and negatively impact manufacturing jobs, while public health organizations believe it will save lives and strengthen the economy. The EPA estimates the new rule will prevent 4,500 premature deaths annually and save up to $46 billion in health benefits. However, there is concern the new rule could complicate President Biden’s election year and his climate agenda.
