Berlinale Calls for Iran to Allow Directors to Attend 2024 Festival – The Hollywood Reporter

The Berlin Film Festival has urged Iran to allow directors Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha to leave the country and attend the world premiere of their new film, “My Favorite Cake”. The directors’ passports have been confiscated by Iranian authorities, and they face a court trial related to their work as filmmakers. The Berlinale is “shocked and dismayed” at this development and calls for their freedom to travel and present their film. The directors have previously participated in the festival; their last film, “Ballad of a White Cow,” was screened in the 2021 Berlinale. The festival has been supportive of Iranian cinema, especially dissident cinema, with previous Iranian winners unable to attend due to similar travel bans.
