Beheading video posted on YouTube prompts response from social media platform

A video showing a man in Pennsylvania beheading his father was publicly available on YouTube for hours, highlighting issues with social media companies’ content moderation capabilities. The man, Justin Mohn, has been charged with first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse. YouTube stated that the video violated their policies against graphic violence and violent extremism, and was subsequently removed. YouTube uses a mix of AI and human moderators to oversee its platform and removed 8.1 million videos for policy violations in Q3 2023. The incident has renewed calls for social media companies to do more in moderating violent content.
