BART train partially derails, catches fire between Orinda and Lafayette stations; track damage ‘not extensive’ officials say

An eight-car train partially derailed and caught fire near Orinda station in California on Monday morning, leading to nine hospitalizations. A giant crane was brought in to lift the derailed BART car back onto the tracks. BART spokesperson Jim Allison reported that the damage to the track was not extensive and expected normal service to return by the morning, albeit with a potential 10-20 minute delay if only one track is operable. The cause of the derailment, which occurred after a computer failure prevented the train from automatically changing routes at an interlocking, is currently under investigation by BART and the California Public Utilities Commission.
