Backlog in U.S. immigration cases reaches new record | San Antonio
The number of pending U.S. immigration cases has hit a record high, exceeding 3 million as of November 2021, according to data from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC). Although the number of judges handling immigration cases has increased to 682 under the Biden administration, each judge is still overseeing an average of 4,500 cases. As a result, asylum seekers face an average wait time of five years for their cases to close, a 67% increase from the beginning of 2022. Despite efforts to curb migration through strict border policies, the backlog of cases accelerated during the Trump administration.
