Austin stabbing: Muslim advocacy group urges hate crime charges against Texas suspect

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the US largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group, is calling for federal and state hate crime charges against Bert James Baker who was arrested for stabbing Zacharia Doar, a 23-year-old Palestinian American man, in Texas. The incident occurred after a pro-Palestinian protest in Austin. The Austin Police Department identified the incident as “bias-motivated” and said the case will be reviewed by the Hate Crimes Review Committee. The Travis County District Attorney’s Office will make the final decision on whether hate crime charges are justified. The attack comes amid a surge in reported anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, and antisemitic incidents in the US.
