Aurora, Colorado, will pay $1.9 million settlement after officers drew weapons on Black family in a stolen vehicle mix-up

The city of Aurora, Colorado, has reached a $1.9 million settlement with a Black family who were mistakenly stopped by police at gunpoint in a stolen vehicle mix-up in 2020. Brittney Gilliam and her family were ordered to exit their vehicle and were handcuffed until police confirmed that their car was not stolen. The family’s attorney, David Lane, suggested that racial profiling played a part in the incident, and expressed hopes that the settlement would lead to policy changes. The district attorney’s office declined to file charges against the officers involved, despite acknowledging the disturbing nature of the incident.
