Attack on elderly Jewish couple near Beverly Hills synagogue investigated as hate crime

A Jewish couple in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, were victims of an antisemitic attack and attempted robbery while walking to their local synagogue. The attacker, identified as Jarris Jay Silagi, 44, demanded the wife’s earrings and hit the husband with a belt. Silagi was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery, and elder abuse, with an added hate crime allegation. The couple were shocked but remain determined to practice their faith, despite a rise in antisemitism across the U.S. Despite his injuries, the husband managed to attend the planned Torah reading at the synagogue.
