Atmospheric rivers expected to wallop the Northwest with heavy rain and snow

Multiple atmospheric rivers are anticipated to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and intense snowfall across the northwestern US. Over half a dozen western states, including Washington, Oregon, Colorado, and Wyoming, are under winter weather alerts. An atmospheric river is a moisture plume that carries saturated air from the tropics to higher latitudes, resulting in persistent rain or snow. The Weather Prediction Center has warned of significant impacts in the Pacific Northwest and Rockies, with travel conditions potentially becoming hazardous. Forecasters expect 5-10 inches of rainfall along the coasts of Oregon, Washington, and Northwestern California, with up to 3 feet of snow in higher elevations.
