Asylum Records, Stinkweeds note vinyl trend

The article discusses the resurgence of vinyl records in the U.S. According to a 2023 year-end report by Luminate, digital album sales decreased by 9.3% while physical album sales, including records, CDs, and cassettes, grew by 8.9% despite the rise of music streaming. Vinyl records made up most of the physical direct-to-consumer album sales with over 6.8 million units sold in 2023. Asylum Records owner Scott Robenalt attributes this trend to the unique experience of physically handling records. Dario Miranda from Stinkweeds Records notes that physical albums allow a sense of ownership over music tastes. The release of Taylor Swift’s “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” on vinyl triggered a spike in physical music sales, with Swift’s albums making up half of the top 10 vinyl records sold in 2023.
