Alaska Airlines: Missing door plug that blew off flight found in Portland teacher’s backyard
A schoolteacher in Portland, identified only as “Bob,” found the door plug of an Alaska Airlines flight in his backyard. The door plug, part of a new Boeing 737-9 MAX, had been blown off during a midair emergency while the plane was at 16,000 feet. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) stated that this door plug can provide essential clues for the investigation. Officials also reported that two passenger cellphones fell out of the plane and were recovered. Door plugs are added to Boeing 737s used in the US that do not require an extra emergency exit; in this case, the aircraft in question was configured with fewer than 180 seats, replacing the need for two mid-cabin exits with this permanent plug.
