Alaska Airlines flight 1282 returns to PDX after a depressurization just after takeoff

An Alaska Airlines flight from Portland to Ontario, California, experienced a depressurization incident, causing the aircraft to turn back and safely land at Portland International Airport. The incident occurred on flight 1282, which had 174 passengers and six crew members on board. It was reported that the missing part of the fuselage was an exit door, which according to commercial pilot and flight instructor Robert Katz, must have been violently ripped off. Alaska Airlines has since issued a statement and temporarily grounded their fleet of 65 Boeing 737-9 aircraft, pending full maintenance and safety inspections. The Boeing 737-9 MAX aircraft involved in the incident had only received its certification two months prior, in November 2023.
