Alameda County is seeking a new ambulance contract with new requirements
Alameda County in California is planning a shift in its emergency medical services (EMS) to ensure patients receive appropriate levels of care. The county’s Emergency Services aims to focus less on transporting everyone to the hospital and more on home visits or telemedicine as needed. The new contract starting in 2026 will require an “appropriate multi-tiered system” for EMS responses. Ambulance services will be funded by patient billing and insurance revenue. The county is also educating the public to understand that emergency responses can go beyond immediate ambulance dispatch, to include dispatcher support, nurse practitioners, or doctors.
