After Speedy Start, Appeals Court Slows Down on Trump Immunity Decision
The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has yet to issue a decision on former President Donald Trump’s immunity claims related to charges of plotting to overturn the 2020 election. This delay has led to Federal District Court Judge Tanya S. Chutkan scrapping her plan to start the trial on March 4. The delay has caught the attention of legal experts and appears to have bolstered Trump’s lawyers’ strategy to postpone the trial until after the presidential race. One possibility for the delay is that the panel is currently deadlocked on the issue of immunity. The Supreme Court could potentially decline to hear the question and allow the appeals court’s ruling to stand; however, a decision could also be reached that would send the case to trial as early as April or postpone it until after the election.
