Advocates call on Texas education officials to approve American Indian/Native Studies course – Houston Public Media

The Grand Prairie Independent School District piloted an American Indian/Native Studies course during the 2021-2022 school year, becoming an innovative course available statewide upon approval. However, the State Board of Education (SBOE) is not considering the creation of statewide curriculum standards for the course. The previous SBOE Chair Keven Ellis had planned to review the course, but new Chair Aaron Kinsey postponed the review to allow more time to examine its contents. Supporters of the course, including the Texas Freedom Network, argue that more ethnic studies courses should be made available to Texas students. The SBOE approved Mexican American and African American studies courses in 2018 and 2020 respectively.
