A third man was buried without his family’s knowledge near Jackson, Mississippi

In Rankin County, the search for Jonathan Hankins continued until a friend created a missing person profile on NamUs, a database managed by the National Institute of Justice, in May 2023. Details about Jonathan’s last whereabouts were posted on public databases and websites like MissingSippi.com. However, it remains unclear whether Rankin County investigators followed these clues. Amidst the search, Gretchen Hankins, Jonathan’s mother, was informed of her son’s death and burial by an NBC News reporter, 18 months after his disappearance. Gretchen’s visit to Jackson police headquarters confirmed her fears when she recognized a tattoo on a deceased body as her son’s. This revelation led to anger and disappointment over the lack of communication from authorities. The Hankins family now plans to exhume Jonathan’s body for a proper burial.
