Amidst the search, Gretchen Hankins, Jonathan’s mother, was informed of her son’s death and burial by an NBC News reporter, 18 months after his disappearance. Gretchen’s visit to Jackson police headquarters confirmed her fears when she recognized a tattoo on a deceased body as her son’s. This revelation led to anger and disappointment over the lack of communication from authorities. The Hankins family now plans to exhume Jonathan’s body for a proper burial.
