3D Scanning Recreates Niagara Falls’ Rainbow Bridge Explosion

– An explosion occurred at Niagara Falls, resulting from a vehicle crash in which two people died. The police are using 3D scanning technology to help create a “digital crash scene” to aid in the investigation, with the vehicle’s Event Data Recorder (EDR) potentially critical to discovering the cause.
– Initially, the explosion caused fears of a terrorist attack, however, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and FBI officials later stated there was “no sign of terrorist activity”. The victims were identified as Kurt P Villani and Monica Villani, who were driving an older model Bentley that may have experienced a mechanical failure, causing it to suddenly accelerate.
– The couple, known for their involvement in the local business community, were reportedly planning to attend a KISS concert in Toronto that night, which was cancelled. The investigation is ongoing, and due to the condition of the vehicle and human remains, the Mayor of Niagara Falls, Robert Restaino, suggests the exact cause of the crash may never be known.

Two dead in Niagara Falls vehicle explosion

Investigations are ongoing into a fatal explosion at Niagara Falls that claimed the lives of two people. Using 3D scanning technology, police are generating a digital crash scene to assist in their inquiry.

Chief of Niagara Falls Police Department, John Faso, cautioned that the investigations will not be quick, describing the effort as a monumental task.

The cause of the crash is being probed, with a focus on potential mechanical failure. The vehicle’s Event Data Recorder (EDR) – similar to an aircraft’s “black box” – is thought to be key to uncovering what led to the explosion.

The vehicle involved was an older model driven by a couple, Kurt P Villani and Monica Villani. Niagara falls Mayor, Robert Restaino, speculated that the car may have had a mechanical glitch causing sudden acceleration before impact.

The couple tragically died when their vehicle abruptly sped up, hit a curb on the US side of the border, became airborne and then exploded.

Initial fears of a terrorist attack were dismissed by New York Governor Kathy Hochul and FBI officials, who found no evidence of terrorist activity.
