27 UChicago Students Visit Iowa Caucuses Through IOP – Chicago Maroon

The Iowa Caucus Trek, run by the Institute of Politics (IOP), allows students to witness the democratic process in action. This year’s trek took place from January 14 to 16, during the Republican primary caucuses in Iowa, and saw 27 students selected from nearly 90 candidates to interact with key voters, political organizers, and local legislators. The caucuses differ from traditional primary voting as they are private gatherings in which voters openly express support for their chosen candidate. IOP also organizes treks around the Republican and Democratic National Conventions and Speaker Series events related to elections. Students get to engage with a variety of perspectives and understand the intricacies of the electoral process.
