2 people killed, 9 injured in pileup that closed fog-shrouded I-5 in California
A devastating pileup involving 35 vehicles on Interstate 5 in California resulted in two deaths and nine injuries. The accident, which occurred on the southbound side of the freeway in Kern County, was caused by poor visibility due to heavy fog. Both sides of the freeway were closed and traffic was rerouted, according to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). The incident occurred during conditions known as Tule fog, a heavy mist that blankets the ground after rain saturates the soil. Emergency responders arrived on the scene around 7:30 a.m., with fire department Battalion Chief Jim Calhoun reporting that two people died and nine others were hospitalized.
