2 dead after 35-vehicle crash on I-5 in California

A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 in Southern California has resulted in two fatalities and nine injuries. The pile-up, which occurred at around 7:30 a.m. on a foggy Saturday morning west of Bakersfield, involved 35 cars including 17 passenger vehicles and 18 big rigs. According to Kern County Fire Department spokesman Jim Calhoun, visibility was around 10 feet when crews arrived at the “chaotic” scene. The crash also led to a plume of natural gas from ruptured tanks on the big rigs. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) stated that southbound lanes would remain closed overnight for cleanup and determination of the crash’s cause.
