1 dead in avalanche at Palisades Tahoe resort in California

An avalanche at the Palisades Tahoe resort in California resulted in one fatality, marking the first U.S. avalanche death of the 2023-2024 winter season, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. The man who died was buried in the avalanche and another person sustained a leg injury, both of whom were guests from outside the area. The avalanche’s debris field was about 150 feet wide, 450 feet long, and 10 feet deep. The incident is currently under investigation and the resort is closed. The avalanche occurred during a heavy snowfall in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
